Briefly, circulation and nerve response are stimulated. Endorphine production gives a sense of well being and lessens stress. More important, the touch provides a sense of nurture and security, and a sense of connection. Physiological, psychological, spiritual, and emotional benefits derive from it, without the invasiveness of other methods, or to boost the benefits they provide.

A good massage should promote relaxation, help with sore or tight muscles, stimulate healthy blood flow, and elimination of of toxins, and impart a feeling of general well being, as all mammals benefit from “strokes” and being touched. As we have social taboos around touch, massage is a ritualised way of having this need met. If you are unwell, have sore muscles, or ongoing muscle tension, a fortnightly massage will help. For general maintenance, a massage once a month is best.
