Oriental Massage started life as massage techniques that were developed in the Far East and India as ancient healing rituals where the massage was said to maintain, restore and promote good health and well being by working with the body’s energetic system.

One of the most popular oriental massages that are available in most health spas today is the Thai Massage. This was originally created by Buddhist Monks over 2,000 years ago who were based in Thailand and has been developed by Asian masseuses since into the form it takes today. Thai massage is designed to relieve joint and muscle tension, increase flexibility and balance the body’s energy system using Meridian pressure points along with ancient breathing control methods and guided stretching techniques. Thai massage has often been described as a lazy form of yoga as the massage therapist stretches and instigates the body into positions whilst you control your breathing. This massage is said to strengthen the body’s nervous system and is both energizing and relaxing for the body.

Another famous oriental massage is the Shiatsu massage which was originally developed in Japan and is quite similar to the Chinese art of acupuncture although pressure is applied with the fingers instead of needles used in acupuncture. The word Shiatsu is made up of two Japanese words merged together, the word ‘shi’ translates as finger and the word ‘atsu’ as pressure. This form of oriental massage’s aim is to promote physical well being and the balance of energy by using fingers, thumbs, palms and hands to apply pressure in the body’s key points.

The Indonesian-Javanese massage system is another lesser known Asian massage where all parts of the therapist’s hand including the knuckles are used to massage and knead the body’s muscles with the help of massage oils. It is known as one of the more painful Asian massages but is also one of the most beneficial in the long term. The massage is effective on the body’s nerves and muscles and relieves back pain and muscle tension along with speeding up fracture repair.

A more modern popular form of oriental massage is the Soapy Massage which originated in massage parlours in Thailand. This form of massage usually involves body to body massage techniques combined with soapy water and suds and usually includes the massage of the genital areas. This massage is not known to have many physical benefits other than forms of sex therapy but in most cases is experienced for entertainment purposes alone.
