Many men believe that the prostate gland has little or nothing to with sexual performance or they are not sure what the role of this very important gland is. Its main role is to produce enough liquid to carry the sperm to its correct destination. A reporter recently asked men about their prostates in the street and the answers were somewhat vague if not downright inaccurate ! Many of the men questioned had a rather vague idea of where the gland actually was.

Once the gland is affected by enlargement (BPH) or infections (prostatitis) then its function will be compromised and can lead to loss of libido and/or impotence. There were less clear cut results however in the case of prostate cancer patients but that is another story.

Other research on animals showed that the carcinogens produced by cigarette smoke had a tendency to gather in the prostatic fluid. This would suggest (although no similar tests have been done on humans) that any process whereby carcinogens can be flushed out of the gland can only be a good thing.

Any massage of the gland itself (either internally or even through the abdomen) is undoubtedly useful as it provides the prostate with fresh blood and oxygen. Which is another reason why exercise in general can help to keep the prostate healthy. A sedentary existence can only lead to blood stagnating in that area and will in the long term be harmful for this delicate gland.
