Question by I’d rather be at the beach: My 5 month old is driving me nuts at night!!!?
We have a bedtime routine – bath, lotion massage, jammies, nurse, bed. She’s a thumb sucker, so a natural self-soother. And she sleeps in an Amby bed (cozy hammock that moves and gently rocks when she moves). She does have reflux, but she’s treated with Zantac, and I’ve completely changed my diet. I go to great pains to make sure her room is at a good temp, and that she’s got comfy jammies (not too hot, not too scratchy – a mom of a poor sleeper will do anything!) There’s a fan in her room, to drown out household noises. I’ll put her in bed, after our routine, and all will be quiet. An hour later, almost every night, she wakes – thinking she’s just had a nice nap. It will take hours to get her back to sleep for the night. I try to keep her in her dark room, rocking, nursing, pacing – just so she gets the idea that it’s still night time. Last night, she didn’t go back to sleep until 12, was up 4 more times in the night, and ready to be awake for the day at 6. Not cool.
My son was a horrible sleeper, so I’m feeling like a failure at this point.
Am I missing something??
Care O – it’s not normal for a 5 month old to only get 6 hours of broken sleep per night. Sorry.

She’s 5 months. What do you expect? Its not you, this is just what babies do!

My baby is 7 months. I went through the same thing and then the doctor said to sleep train. That means as hard as it is you let them cry. After 1 night of that he now sleeps for 10 hours without interruption. Good luck. First night is toughest.

Try giving her a later bedtime (45 min to a hour) so she will be more tired at bedtime. If that does not work just remember it’s natural for babies to have an on and off sleeping schedule! It sounds like you have done just about everything!

hows the napping?I bring it up mainly because with our 4 month old this seems to dictate what kind of night we will have. not always, but I do have her on a better nap schedule and she sleeps better now at night. anyhow she could be craving the attenchoin, which is okay, but to a point, she needs to know that its time for sleep not play. I dont imagine you swaddle because you mentioned that she is a thumb sucker, but I have heard that during times of development babies often wake themselves up by practicing so to speak on motor skills and such. in these cases its nerves firing and not the baby trying to drive you crazy. for things like this swaddling is great because they dont wake themselves up as much. however if she is too used to being without it now that could also pose a problem. I feel for you darling… even a night of bad sleep feels awful, nights and nights without it, you then start to get a little wild eyed. good luck!
